Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming part of modern life and the legal field. Attorneys should learn how to use this technology to make themselves competitive in this evolving market. However, lawyers must be careful to use AI with the ABA Rules of Professional Conduct and their state bar ethics rules in mind. This CLE will go over the risks and benefits of using AI technology and things to keep in mind when selecting software to use. Additionally, the ethical rules to remember when using AI will be covered. An attorney needs to know what ethical questions to ask before and during use of AI to ensure proper use of the product while protecting themselves, their firm, and their clients. The following ABA Rules of Professional Conduct will be covered: 1.1 (Competence), 1.3 (Diligence), 1.4 (Communication), 1.5 (Fees), 1.6 (Confidentiality), 5.1-5.3 (Supervision). Lawyers can be cutting edge and ethical when armed with this knowledge about AI and ethics.
