DESCRIPTION: Implicit biases can be seen in the form of microaggressions, which impact the legal profession and workplace. This program introduces attorneys to skills needed to confront interpersonal biases, including in legal workplaces. Participants will discover how small acts of affirmation can combat everyday bias and make a better workplace for all. The CLE will also cover reasons for inaction, in order to allow personal reflection. Specifics on how to intervene when you identify a microaggression is covered, allowing attorneys the opportunity to learn bias-reducing strategies. Attorneys will gain an understanding of intervention strategies for both people impacted and bystanders. Specific examples are given to allow participants to consider scenarios and how to handle them, and these include scenarios within the legal field that attorneys may encounter. Upon completion, attorneys will begin a process of recognizing microaggressions, including in legal settings, and apply intervention strategies. These skills will allow participants to appropriately act, which will assist in eliminating bias in the legal field.
