About

DESCRIPTION: Attorneys often operate in a high-pressure professional culture that prioritizes productivity over personal well-being, contributing to chronic stress, burnout, and diminished professional judgment. This program examines the neuroscience of stress and burnout and connects emotional regulation directly to an attorney’s duty of competence, offering practical, evidence-based strategies to support well-being and effective legal practice. Dr. Doreen Dodgen McGee, a practicing psychologist, explains how chronic stress affects brain function, distinguishes stress from burnout, and introduces the concept of “belonging to yourself” versus “belonging to your work.” Using neuroscience-based explanations, she helps attorneys understand how workplace demands, personal choices, and environment affect cognitive performance, emotional regulation, and decision-making, allowing for more intentional and informed use of self-care tools. Using frameworks like the Zones of Regulation, participants will learn to identify their personal stress indicators and develop individualized self-care toolboxes with concrete strategies for emotional regulation. Attorneys will be provided with over 20 strategies to consider implementing in their daily lives, in order to prevent, detect, and/or address mental health issues that can impact an attorney’s ability to competently perform legal services. The program equips attorneys with concrete daily practices that support competent legal practice and prevent professional impairment and concerns with competence.
