Ethics and Professionalism CLE for Attorneys: Civility, Integrity, and Courtroom Conduct

There's a difference between knowing the rules of professional conduct and actually demonstrating professionalism. This CLE is explains how to demonstrate professionalism with an eye to the ethics every attorney must adhere to.

Judge Adrian L. Brown has serves as a State Circuit Court Judge in Oregon's 4th Judicial District. Before taking the bench, she was an Assistant United States Attorney and a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Air Force. She has served on both the Multnomah County Bar's Professionalism Committee and the Oregon State Bar's Professionalism Commission. When Judge Brown talks about what professionalism looks like and what its absence costs, she's drawing on direct observation of attorneys in action, not abstract principles.

This course draws a sharp distinction that most CLE programs blur: ethics are the rules, and professionalism is what the bench, the bar, the public, and opposing counsel actually expect of you. Judge Brown covers both. On the ethics side, she walks through ABA Rules 1.1, 3.1, 3.3, 3.5, 3.8, 4.1, and 8.2 through the lens of real courtroom scenarios and common pitfalls. On the professionalism side, she covers what jurors notice and remember about attorney conduct, how judges and their staff respond to unprofessional behavior, and the concrete cost of the combative posture attorneys sometimes adopt in litigation.

This is a strong ethics credit for any attorney and is delivered by someone who has evaluated it from both sides of the courtroom. The perspective of a sitting judge and former federal prosecutor isn't something most CLE programs can offer. This one does.
