Washington CLE Requirements: What Attorneys Need to Know

  • May 6
  • 2 min read

Washington attorneys report their continuing legal education requirements on a three-year reporting cycle. Here's a clear breakdown of what's required and how to get it done.

Washington CLE Requirements

Active Washington attorneys must complete 45 CLE credits every three years. Within those 45 credits, you need:

  • 15 credits of law and legal procedure

  • 6 credits of ethics and professional responsibility, including at least one credit specifically on equity

You can carry over up to 15 credits to the next reporting period, up to 2 of which can be ethics credits.

Your Deadline

Credits must be completed by December 31st of the final year of your reporting period. You then have until February 1st of the following year to certify your hours. Your reporting period is assigned when you're admitted to the bar, and you can look it up on the Bar's website.

One thing to note: Washington caps earning credits at 8 hours per day, so you can't knock out the whole requirement in a single marathon session.
