Attorney Professionalism CLE: Civility, Integrity, and the Lawyer's Role in Public Trust

Judge Maalik Summer brings a perspective shaped by years on the Washington County Circuit Court, Beaverton Municipal Court, and as an administrative law judge, as well as a background in family law representing clients in some of the most emotionally charged cases the legal system handles. That breadth of experience informs how he thinks about professionalism: it is the foundation of client trust, public confidence, and meaningful advocacy.

The course works through the five core pillars of professionalism, which include competence, integrity, civility, accountability, and commitment to justice. Judge Summer addresses the situations where professionalism is hardest to maintain, touching on client pressure, adversarial culture, burnout that erodes judgment, and communication failures that damage relationships with clients and colleagues alike. He covers how incivility creates bias and why that matters.

The ABA Professional Rules of Conduct covered include 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.16, and 8.4, and they are examined through the lens of how they apply in practice rather than in the abstract.
